FAQs
What is Learn to Play Hockey?
Learn to Play is a 6-week introductory hockey program designed to teach new players the basic skills they need to start playing hockey, including skating, stickhandling, passing, shooting, and basic game concepts.
Â
Does my child need hockey experience?
No! Learn to Play is specifically designed for kids who are new to hockey.
Â
Does my child need to know how to skate?
Your child does not need to be a great skater, but it should not be their first time on the ice. If they have never skated before, we recommend starting with Learn to Skate or getting a bit of skating experience on your own.
Â
How long is the program?
Learn to Play typically runs for 6 weeks with one ice session each week.
Â
When is Learn to Play offered?
We typically offer Learn to Play twice a year—our summer session begins around June and our fall session begins around September.
Â
Does my child need their own hockey equipment?
No. There is an option to receive a full set of hockey gear with registration, making it easy for new families to get started without purchasing all the equipment separately.

There is also an option to register for the class at a lower cost and rent the needed equipment.
Â
What equipment does my child need?
Players need full hockey equipment, including skates, helmet, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, hockey pants, shin guards, and a stick. Equipment options are available when you register.

What does Learn to Play Cost?
$215 for the class with the included hockey equipment.
$75 plus the $25 equipment rental fee if renting equipment.
Â
Is Learn to Play only for little kids?
No. Learn to Play is based more on experience than skill level. It is intended for kids who are ready to learn hockey but don't yet have the skills or experience to jump directly into regular league play.
Â
What will my child learn?
Players work on basic hockey skating, stopping, turning, stickhandling, passing, shooting, puck control, and introductory game skills.

Is Learn to Play competitive?
No. The focus is on learning, having fun, building confidence, and getting comfortable playing hockey.
Â
What happens after Learn to Play?
Most players are ready to continue into the Southern Utah YETI Youth Hockey program, where they can keep developing their skills through regular practices and games.
Â
What if my child finishes Learn to Play but isn't ready for league hockey?
That’s okay! Every player develops at a different pace. Coaches can help you decide whether your child should repeat Learn to Play, spend more time developing their skating, or move into the YETI program.
Â
What if we're not sure hockey is right for our child?
That’s exactly why Learn to Play exists. It gives kids a chance to experience hockey, learn the basics, and see how much they enjoy the sport without needing to jump straight into a full hockey season.
Â
Where does Learn to Play fit in the hockey pathway?
It’s simple:
Â
Learn to Skate → Learn to Play Hockey → YETI Youth Hockey
Start with skating, learn the game, then join a team!
